The Minister for Defense and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul has commissioned an accommodation complex for officers of the 155 Armoured Regiment in Damongo.
The facility is to address the accommodation challenges of the Regiment, and to ease the discomfort that young officers of the unit are faced with.
The commissioning ceremony took place on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
The Commanding Officer for the 155 Armoured Regiment, Lt. col. Philemon Hoffman in a welcome address, disclosed that the establishment of the regiment in the region forms part of the Ghana Armed Force’s drive of responding to the changing security dynamics of the country.
He commended the chief of the Army Staff for his leadership role in the establishment of the 155 Armoured Regiment which he said appeared impossible because of the nature of the grounds.
Lt. col. Hoffman expressed satisfaction over the work done so far to equip the unit and asked for more projects such as an office complex, repairs workshop, medical aid post, a garage amongst others to complement existing ones.
He also conveyed words of gratitude to the first Commanding Officer of the Regiment for his tireless efforts in the development of the regiment.
The Defense minister, Dominic Nitiwul stated that government remains committed to providing decent accommodation for personnel the Ghana Armed Forces.
He explained that decent accommodation enhances effective administration and operational efficiency of the army and revealed that upon assumption office in 2017, his ministry embarked on the regeneration project in all garrisons.
Mr. Nitiwul admitted that more accommodation projects will have to be embarked on to eradicate the shortfall caused by recent recruitments in the Ghana Armed Forces.
He asserted that the Ghana Armed Forces has seen tremendous improvement across all garrisons which he said has remarkably eased pressure on accommodation.
According to him, the 155 Armoured Regiment was established with five deployed officers and twenty soldiers which blossomed into 484 soldiers which came with its attendant logistical requirements and recalled that some 180-bed accommodation facility was commissioned for the regiment by the Chief of Army Staff last year.
He noted that apart from maintaining peace and security in the region, the establishment of the regiment has contributed to economic opportunities for residents of the community and called on the regional minister and all stakeholders in the region to continue to support the regiment to maintain the prevailing peace in the region.
The Chief of Army Staff and other senior officers of the Ghana Armed Forces accompanied the Defence minister to commission the facility.
