The Queen Mothers Association of the Savannah Region (SRQMA) has intensified efforts to promote peaceful coexistence between the Gonjas and Fulani communities within the region.

Ahead of the upcoming International Women's Day on March 8th, 2024, the association convened a pre-meeting to address pressing matters and advocate for harmony among these communities.

Speaking to Kasha FM, Hajia Doctor Kansawurche Bukari, President of SRQMA, reflected on the association's two-year journey since its inception and highlighted the implementation of monitoring and evaluation workshops aimed at assessing the progress made and addressing emerging challenges within the region.

One pressing issue identified by SRQMA is the recurring conflict arising from cattle grazing on farmlands in the Savannah region, particularly between Fulani herders and local communities. In response, the association has taken proactive steps to address this issue and promote peaceful coexistence.

To facilitate resolution and dialogue, SRQMA is forming a committee comprising representatives from various sectors, including traditional leaders, agricultural officers, community leaders, farmers, and security personnel among others to intervening in instances of conflict, particularly related to cattle grazing, and finding amicable solutions to promote understanding and collaboration.

Additionally, SRQMA has initiated engagements with essential service providers, such as health workers and the Ghana Education Service (GES), to support the integration of Fulani community members into educational and healthcare systems. Efforts are underway to ensure access to education for Fulani children and provide prenatal care and hospital delivery services for pregnant Fulani women.

In a bid to promote widespread awareness and community involvement, SRQMA encourages representatives to disseminate information to mediation committees across various localities. By ensuring that information reaches these committees, they aim to foster a culture of dialogue and understanding among all community members.

As the region prepares to commemorate International Women's Day, SRQMA's advocacy for peaceful coexistence stands as a testament to the crucial role of women-led initiatives in promoting social cohesion and sustainable development within the Savannah region.
