The Fulbe community in the Damongo Constituency has refuted allegations that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leadership are obstructing their participation in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
Addressing the press on Monday, May 20, 2024, representatives of the Fulbe community, Madam Rukaya and Master Yakubu, denounced the accusations as baseless and deserving of contempt.
They emphasized that their community members, whose families have resided in Damongo for generations, are integrated into the local society and treated as indigenes.
"The claims that the NDC is preventing us from registering are entirely false," said Madam Rukaya. "We have successfully registered 471 Fulbe individuals so far, and we face no obstruction from the NDC."
While expressing their support for legitimate voter registration, the Fulbe representatives criticized the practice of busing individuals from distant locations such as Wa into the constituency for registration.
"This practice is wrong and should not be accepted," stated Master Yakubu. "The Member of Parliament for Damongo should ensure his party members adhere to the law and refrain from illegal activities."
The Fulbe community members also highlighted their long-standing residence in Damongo, noting that they have obtained Ghana cards and voter identification cards after living in the constituency for over six decades.
They expressed their anticipation for participating in the upcoming December 7 elections, aiming to elect a leader who would empower them with sustainable solutions rather than temporary relief and unfulfilled promises.
"False claims and rumours should not affect our legal status as registered voters," they stressed. "It is crucial to rely on accurate information and to verify facts before spreading them.
Our voting rights are protected by law and cannot be arbitrarily revoked. Let us concentrate on exercising our democratic rights and not be distracted by unfounded accusations."
The Fulbe representatives concluded by praising the NDC for their inclusive treatment and support, contrasting it with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which they accused of making empty promises and engaging with their community only during election periods.
The Fulbe community's statement emphasizes the importance of fair and lawful voter registration processes and expresses their commitment to participating in Ghana's democratic process with integrity.
