The Bui Power Authority has donated two pickup vehicles to the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council (SRCC) to strengthen the region’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
At the handover ceremony, Savannah Regional Minister Hon. Salisu Issifu Be-Awuribe described the donation as a timely and strategic intervention to tackle the security and environmental threats of illegal mining.
According to him, the unique terrain of the Savannah Region, marked by rugged landscapes and poorly defined road networks, demands durable vehicles that can withstand long and difficult journeys.
He emphasized that the pickups will not only enhance accessibility to hard-to-reach areas but will also allow security personnel to transport seized items and provide adequate protection while carrying out operations.
“These vehicles will serve multiple purposes, including surveillance, operational support, and rapid response,” Hon. Be-Awuribe explained. “They are invaluable assets that will strengthen our capacity to enforce the law, protect natural resources, and ensure the safety of our communities.”
The Minister further stressed that the menace of illegal mining remains a serious threat to both the environment and livelihoods in the region.
He, therefore, praised Bui Power Authority for providing such tangible support, highlighting the partnership as a model of collaboration between state institutions and corporate organizations.
“Illegal mining is not just an environmental issue it is a security and developmental challenge. That is why the support we have received today from Bui Power is so important.
We appeal to other agencies, stakeholders, and partners to emulate this gesture and contribute towards safeguarding the future of our region,” he added.
With the logistical support, the SRCC and its security partners are expected to step up patrols, enhance surveillance, and respond swiftly to incidents, reinforcing ongoing efforts to protect the region’s resources and communities.
