Curfew May Restrict Night Events in Bole, Sawla, But Damba Festival Will Be Celebrated –SR Minister Confirms

The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Be-Awuribe, has assured the public that the Damba Festival will be celebrated across Gonjaland this year, dismissing rumors that the event had been cancelled.

Updating residents on the Gbiniyiri conflict and its impact during Ashumaa Savannah on Kasha FM, Thursday, September 4, the Minister said government, in collaboration with traditional authorities, is working to restore peace and facilitate the safe return of those who fled to Côte d’Ivoire.

He emphasized that all Gonja chiefs who observe Damba will celebrate it this year.

“There should be no cause for panic. Every Gonja town will celebrate Damba, except Bole and Sawla where curfews may restrict night activities. However, daytime celebrations are allowed,” he said.

Hon. Be-Awuribe added that security reports over the past seven days indicate that calm is gradually returning to the area.

Should the situation continue to improve, he will engage relevant security agencies to consider lifting the curfew so that Bole and Sawla can also celebrate at night.

“Damba is a cherished cultural heritage of the Gonja people. As a Gonja myself, I would not be happy if anyone is denied the chance to celebrate, unless circumstances are beyond our control,” the Minister added.

Damba Festival is one of the most significant cultural events of the Gonja Kingdom, fostering unity, identity, and tradition.
