The Damongo Saturday Weekly Market is set to operate temporarily as a daily market to make way for the reconstruction of the town’s 24-hour market.
The decision was announced by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, during a meeting with market women and men on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, where stakeholders deliberated on alternative arrangements ahead of the commencement of construction works.
Under the new arrangement, traders currently operating within the 24-hour market area have been given three months to relocate to the Saturday Weekly Market, which will serve as the temporary trading centre.
The relocation deadline has been set for March 30, 2026.
Hon. Castro clarified that the reconstruction exercise will not attract any compensation, and called on traders to cooperate fully to ensure a smooth relocation and timely execution of the project.
He further assured traders of adequate security at the temporary market site to guarantee safety and the uninterrupted flow of business during the transition period.
The proposed temporary relocation site was accepted and agreed upon by both market women and men, a move expected to minimize disruptions to trading activities while paving the way for the construction of a modern 24-hour market facility to boost commercial activities in Damongo.
