At the end of the keen contest, Salifu Rahim of Canteen JHS Block “B” was crowned champion. Kojo Kyle Borenyi of Cathedral JHS secured second place, while Akolgo Selina of St. Anne’s JHS placed third.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Royals Club, Joshua Issahaku Kotochi, described the competition as a major milestone, marking ten years of promoting literacy, confidence and academic excellence among students in the area.
According to him, what began as a modest initiative has grown into a proud academic tradition that continues to nurture young talents.
He noted that the spelling bee has evolved beyond simply spelling words correctly, serving as a platform to build courage, discipline and intellectual growth.
The Club President expressed gratitude to Hon. Mutawakilu for his consistent support towards education and youth empowerment, stating that his sponsorship has sustained the competition and created opportunities for students to develop their academic potential.
Hon. Mutawakilu in his address commended the initiative and acknowledged former Damongo/Daboya MP, Hon. Sammy Wusah, for introducing the competition during his tenure.
He explained that he continued sponsoring the event from 2013 until 2019, when political circumstances led to its suspension. He expressed excitement over its revival after six years and pledged his continued commitment.
Hon. Mutawakilu shared the story of a former participant, Mavis, who is currently pursuing higher education at the University of Mines and Technology. He revealed that he provides her with financial support of not less than GH¢5,000 each semester.
He further announced that all 48 contestants will receive GH¢200 each. The final prize presentation is scheduled for March 6, 2026.
The first-place winner will receive GH¢15,000, the second-place winner GH¢10,000, and the third-place winner GH¢7,500. Additionally, the top three contestants will receive GH¢5,000 annually throughout their Senior High School education and GH¢5,000 per semester upon gaining admission to the university.
Hon. Mutawakilu also disclosed that the organisers will receive GH¢10,000 in recognition of their efforts. He emphasised that the initiative is non-political, with organisers drawn from different political backgrounds.
He encouraged students to take their studies seriously and proposed the introduction of zonal competitions to widen participation and allow for earlier preparations each year.
Chairman of the occasion, Chief Abdallah Ahmed Trodompewura, thanked Hon. Mutawakilu for his sustained support for education and youth development. He urged students to remain committed to their academic pursuits in order to achieve success.
The 10th Royals Club Independence Spelling Bee emphasized how literacy and community support continue to play a key role in developing the next generation of learners in Damongo.
