PIAC Begins Savannah Tour with Stakeholder Engagement, Project Inspection Agenda

Members of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) have commenced a working visit to the Savannah Region aimed at strengthening oversight and inspecting projects funded through Ghana’s petroleum revenues.

The delegation, led by Chairman of PIAC’s Public Affairs and Communications Subcommittee, Zambaga Rufai Saminu, began the tour with a courtesy call on the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Bi Awuribe, at the Regional Coordinating Council in Damongo on Monday, April 13, 2026.

The visit forms part of PIAC’s mandate to promote transparency and accountability in the management and utilization of petroleum revenues, while also deepening engagement with key stakeholders at the regional level.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Saminu expressed appreciation for the warm reception and emphasized the importance of collaboration between PIAC and regional authorities in ensuring effective oversight.

He noted that the Committee’s presence in the region is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public engagement and monitor the impact of petroleum-funded projects.

In his remarks, Hon. Salisu Bi Awuribe welcomed the delegation and commended PIAC for its role in promoting good governance within the petroleum sector.

He described the engagement as timely, highlighting its importance in fostering dialogue, learning, and shared responsibility in resource management.

Discussions during the meeting focused on key development priorities in the Savannah Region, including roads, education, healthcare, and water infrastructure. Both parties underscored the need for efficient utilization of petroleum revenues to address these critical sectors.

Transparency and accountability featured prominently in the deliberations, with Mr. Saminu stressing the need for openness in the management of public funds.

He indicated that access to clear and timely information on resource allocation is essential in building public trust and encouraging citizen participation.

He further emphasized that accountability goes beyond financial reporting, noting that projects must deliver tangible benefits to communities.

The issue of monitoring petroleum-funded projects was also highlighted, with the PIAC delegation calling for stronger collaboration between oversight bodies and local authorities to ensure projects are executed effectively and within budget.

Additionally, Mr. Saminu highlighted the importance of properly branding projects funded through petroleum revenues to enhance public awareness and facilitate tracking of development outcomes.

The meeting also touched on the prudent use of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund, with both sides agreeing on the need for strategic allocation to maximize its impact on local development.

The PIAC delegation is expected to continue its tour with inspections of selected projects across the region to assess their progress and impact.
