Damongo Agricultural College has matriculated 164 fresh students for the 2026/2027 academic year, comprising 88 males and 76 females.
The matriculation ceremony brought together representatives from various institutions and organisations, including the Ghana Prisons Service, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Damongo Municipal Assembly, and the Gonjaland Youth Association, among others.
Addressing the gathering on behalf of the Principal, the Vice Principal, Mr Clement Abiire Akurugo, welcomed the newly admitted students and congratulated them on gaining admission to the institution.
He disclosed that the college had admitted 164 students for the academic year, with 88 males and 76 females. According to him, the number of female students admitted this year represents the second-highest female intake since the establishment of the college.
Mr Akurugo further revealed that the college could potentially be upgraded to university status, following ongoing engagements and assessments involving a ministerial committee from the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council.
He explained that both internal and external assessment teams had visited the college to evaluate its infrastructure and other facilities as part of the process towards establishing a university in Damongo.
“The internal and external assessment teams have visited the school to assess its infrastructure, and the college has also submitted the data requested by them.
We are now waiting for their feedback. With this development, we can say that the school may become a university,” he said.
The potential transformation of the college into a university could mark a significant milestone in the development of tertiary education in the Savannah Region, subject to the outcome of the ongoing assessments and the necessary approvals.
However, Mr Akurugo also highlighted some infrastructure challenges facing the college, particularly defects affecting one of its multi-storey hostel buildings.
According to him, the defects have made it difficult to accommodate students on the upper floors of the building, raising concerns about the institution’s accommodation capacity.
The challenge underscores the need for continued investment in infrastructure to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment for students.
The matriculation ceremony formally welcomed the 164 freshers into the college community as they begin their academic journey for the 2026/2027 academic year.
