The Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Biikunuto Soale Jewu I has called on the Minister of Chieftaincy and religious affairs to resolve the land dispute between Gonjas and Mamprusis.
There has been a land dispute between Gonjas and Mamprusis in the North Gonja district that has escalated into violent conflicts a number of times leading to loss of lives and of property at Lukula and Mempeasem.
Speaking at his private residence in Damongo when the minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng paid a courtesy call on him on Friday February 16 2024, the Yagbonwura said he is disturbed that the needles dispute is destroying the cordial and friendly relationship Gonjas and Mamprusis have enjoyed for many decades.
He therefore urged the minister to use his good office and influence to resolve the dispute and restore peace in the area.
He also called for the construction of the regional house of chiefs and establishments of traditional councils in the Savannah region.
In his response, the minister of Chieftaincy and religious affairs Stephen Asamoah Boateng announced that the contract for the construction of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs has been signed between the government and Vulcan Holdings Limited and that construction will soon commence.
Regarding the land disputes between Gonjas and Manprusis in Lukula and Mempeasem, the minister assured that plans were underway to resolve the issue and prevent future conflicts.
