Opinion: Dr. Bawumia's Role in Ghana's Economic Woes: Analyzing the Failure of the Economic Management Team

Ghana, once hailed as an emerging African powerhouse, is now facing an excruciating economic crisis, marked by soaring unemployment, rising inflation, and a weakening currency. As the head of the economic management team and the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr. Bawumia cannot escape responsibility for the current economic mess.

Through a critical analysis of his policies and decisions, it becomes clear that he bears significant responsibility for Ghana's economic woes, and cannot be absolved from the prevailing hardships.

One of the cornerstones of Dr. Bawumia's tenure was the promise to introduce a "dam for every village" initiative, aimed at boosting agricultural productivity. However, the implementation of the 1V1D project has been marred by poor planning and mismanagement, hindering its success. This failure highlights Dr. Bawumia's inability to effectively deliver on promises, contributing to the economic mess in the agricultural sector.

Similarly, the promise of one million dollars for every constituency remains unfulfilled, leaving local communities without the anticipated injection of capital to drive development. This lack of progress showcases a failure in Dr. Bawumia's ability to translate rhetoric into tangible results, exacerbating the economic hardships faced by Ghanaians.

Dr. Bawumia's promise to eradicate water and toilet problems throughout Ghana within two years demonstrated a lack of understanding of the complexities involved in such infrastructure development.

The unmet targets in this area further highlight his failure to prioritize effectively and address fundamental issues facing the country. As a result, many Ghanaians continue to suffer from inadequate access to basic amenities, contributing to the economic and social challenges faced by the nation.

Despite his promise to move Ghana from taxation to production, Dr. Bawumia and his team have overseen the introduction of over forty (40) new taxes. This excessive burden on businesses and individuals has stifled investment and economic growth, leading to job losses and reduced productivity. It is clear that his policies have had a detrimental impact on economic development, perpetuating the economic mess Ghana is facing today.

Under Dr. Bawumia's watch, Ghana's debt levels have reached alarming heights, exceeding one trillion Ghanaian cedis. Despite the substantial borrowing, there is little to show in terms of tangible development or improved economic indicators. This mismanagement of the country's finances has left Ghana vulnerable to economic shocks, further worsening the economic mess.

Finally,  I submit strongly and forcibly  that Dr. Bawumia, as the head of the economic management team and Vice President of Ghana, cannot absolve himself from the current economic mess. His failed promises, unrealistic goals, excessive taxation, and mismanagement of public finances have contributed significantly to Ghana's economic woes.

It is imperative for the government to acknowledge these shortcomings and leave the driving seat for  the visionary and the nation builder John Dramani Mahama the leader and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)  to come and put in place pragmatic policies and programs   to address the root causes of the crisis and bring Ghana back to it’s lost glory. It is only through sound economic planning, prudent fiscal management, and effective implementation of programs  that  Ghana can  begin to overcome the hardships it currently faces.

Shalom !
