The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called for a peaceful election and urged the paramount chiefs of the North to ensure that the two presidential candidates, both northerners, address concerns about the region's ability to lead.

Speaking at the 2024 Yagbon Damba festival in Damongo, Savannah Regional capital, on Tuesday, September 23, 2024, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah noted that this is the first time in the history of Ghana that two northern candidates are contesting for the presidency.

He highlighted both the opportunities and risks this election poses, urging Northern leaders to refute certain Southern perceptions that question the North’s ability to organize effectively and govern the nation.

“This election is a chance for the North to demonstrate its capability,” he stated, warning that a poorly managed election could deepen existing suspicions and negatively impact future generations in the North.

He urged the three paramount chiefs—Yagbonwura, Nayiri, and Ya-Na—to hold the presidential candidates accountable as the nation approaches the polls.

He therefore called for their active involvement with stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, to address concerns over the electoral register and ensure a smooth election process.

At the festival, Mr. Asiedu Nketia, representing former President John Dramani Mahama, emphasized the importance of unity and peace in the electoral process for the future of the North.
