The Savannah Regional Youth Network (SRYN) hosted a peace dialogue on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the Damongo Community Center, aimed at promoting a peaceful and inclusive election in the Savannah Region.
The event brought together local leaders, community representatives, civil society organizations, and community journalists from across the region, all united in their commitment to promoting electoral peace.
Mr. Issaka Zitor, Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Savannah Region, delivered a keynote address highlighting Ghana's long standing reputation for peaceful elections.
He stated that Ghana is widely regarded as one of the most peaceful countries in Africa when it comes to selecting leaders, and he expressed confidence that the 2024 elections would continue the legacy.
Mr. Zitor emphasized the critical role of peace in the region’s development, urging the youth to actively engage in political decision-making.
“Youth are the future leaders, and their involvement is vital to the progress of any society,” he said.
To ensure a peaceful electoral process before, during, and after the elections, Mr. Zitor outlined four key focus areas identified by the NCCE.
Combating misinformation, promoting religious and ethnic tolerance, addressing issues of ethnicity, and preventing electoral violence.
He added that educating the public on these issues would be key to maintaining a peaceful election environment.
Representatives from various political parties also had the opportunity to speak, advocating for peace as the December elections approach.
Father Dum David, who chaired the event, thanked the participants for their commitment and urged them to take the message of peace back to their communities.
He encouraged them to become advocates for unity and peaceful elections in their respective areas.
