WGMA Marks Ghana’s 68th Independence Day with a Modest Celebration

The West Gonja Municipal Assembly (WGMA) commemorated Ghana’s 68th Independence Day with a modest but symbolic celebration at the Damongo Astro Turf.

The event, held under the theme "Reflect, Review, and Reset," emphasized the need for national self-evaluation and reform.

Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Lawyer Salisu Bi-Awuribi, who also serves as the acting Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), highlighted in his address that this year’s celebration aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for a restrained observance.

He explained that only a select number of institutions participated in the parade, symbolizing the government's commitment to resetting national priorities.

"We must reflect on our past, review our actions, and reset for the future. The struggle to build a greater Ghana has just begun," he stated.

The Minister stressed that while history is important, excessive spending on celebrations is impractical when pressing national challenges remain unresolved.

He called for a re-evaluation of attitudes, governance practices, and cultural values to foster a stronger and more progressive Ghana.

The event was graced by the Paramount Chief of the Damongo Traditional Area, Jira Damongo-wura Seidu Boresa Kelly I, who represented the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura BiiKunuto Jewu Soale I.

A total of 10 schools—five primary and five junior high schools—participated in the marching parade.

The results were as follows:

Primary Schools

• 1st Place: Falahiyat E/A Primary School

• 2nd Place: Almanara E/A Primary School

• 3rd Place: St. Theresa Primary School

Junior High Schools

• 1st Place: Yagbon Junior High School

• 2nd Place: Kurabaso Junior High School

• 3rd Place: Damongo Girls Model JHS.
