The management, PTA, old students, and current students of Yabum Junior High School in Damongo have petitioned revered traditional leaders over encroachment on the school's land.
The petition, submitted on March 7, 2025, to Damongowura Boresa Seidu Kelly I and Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, raises concerns about plans to develop an AstroTurf field on the school grounds under the Social Cohesion Project (SOCO) by a private developer.
The school also alleges that a former land commissioner, Mr. Nyari, has unlawfully taken part of its land despite repeated pleas for him to vacate.
According to the petitioners, a similar encroachment was halted in 2000 by then-Damongowura Jakpa Lermu.
However, they claim that the same land was resold to Mr. Nyari in 2023, leading to renewed concerns.
They further argue that the persistent demand for land documents from the school has been used as a pretext to seize portions of its land, warning that all public educational institutions in the area could face similar threats.
The school is urging the traditional authorities to intervene and protect the land, emphasizing that preserving the space is crucial for a conducive learning environment.
Yabum JHS was originally established as a middle school in March 1965 and has undergone several name changes under different education policies.
It shares boundaries with major town roads, the Municipal Health Directorate, Jakpa JHS, and New Life Preparatory School.
Over the years, significant portions of its land have been lost to encroachment, with its current boundary extending to Somei Sonka.
The petition was signed by key stakeholders, including PTA Chairperson Memunatu Gaddo, SMC Chairman Haruna Seidu, old students’ representative Iddrisu Mutala, and Assemblyman Karim Inusah, among others.
Below is the petition.
