2025 Damba Festival to Focus on Peace, Healing, and Unity- Yagbonwura

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Jira Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has dedicated this year’s Damba Festival to prayers, reflection, and unity in the wake of recent tragedies that have affected Gonjaland and the nation at large.

Breaking away from the usual fanfare and merrymaking, the 2025 celebration will take on a more solemn and spiritual tone, with interfaith activities designed to bring healing, restore hope, and strengthen national cohesion.

The decision follows a series of unfortunate events, including the helicopter crash in Adansi that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians three of whom were natives of Gonjaland and the violent conflict in Gbiniyiri, which led to the loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of many residents.

To mark the festival, a lineup of spiritual and traditional activities has been announced:

Monday, 8th August 2025 – An all-night Christian prayer session at the Jakpa Palace, organized by the West Gonja Council of Churches, focusing on peace, unity, support for bereaved families, restoration of affected communities, and divine wisdom for national leaders.

Tuesday, 9th August 2025 – Traditional leaders and spiritualists will perform sacrifices to pacify the gods and seek divine protection for Gonjaland and beyond.

Wednesday, 10th August 2025 (Grand Burbar Day) Muslim clerics will lead recitations of the Holy Qur’an for peace and national cohesion, while the Gonja Army (local warriors) will perform cultural rites in honor of fallen heroes, including victims of the helicopter crash and the Gbiniyiri conflict.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Chief Benkromwura Seidu Bakari Saaka, His Royal Majesty urged all citizens of Gonjaland, both at home and abroad, to observe this year’s Damba with reverence and unity.

“This year’s Damba is not just a celebration of culture. It is a solemn call to prayer, a symbol of unity, and a plea for divine healing across our cherished land,” the statement emphasized.
