Late Drama! UDS Strike in Extra Time to Win World University Games

In a stunning climax to the 2025 World University Games football tournament held in Dalian, China, on Sunday, September 28, 2025, the University for Development Studies (UDS) of Ghana clinched the title with a dramatic late goal in extra time, downing Paulista University of Brazil 2–1 to become the first African university team ever to win the championship.

The final saw UDS face defending champions Paulista University of Brazil. Paulista stunned the crowd early, with Gabriel Viera netting a goal in the opening 30 seconds to put UDS on the back foot.

UDS regrouped, dominated possession, and pressed forward relentlessly, but the Brazilians held firm. In injury time, captain Asigre Sulemana slotted home an equalizer after Frimpong’s dribble forced a save, pushing the match into extra time.

Deep into extra time, UDS’s pressure paid off. From a corner delivered by Ezedeen Alhassan, the Brazilian goalkeeper Silva failed to deal comfortably, and the ball slipped through his grasp into the net, giving UDS the 2–1 winner in the 121st minute.
