After months of uncertainty and controversy, the renovated Saturday Weekly Market in Damongo has finally come alive, welcoming traders and buyers from across the West Gonja Municipality and beyond.
The project, funded by West Gonja Municipal common fund secretariat during the tenure of former MCE Hon. Karim Musah Kusubari, was initially commissioned by the member of Parliament for the Damongo constituency, Hon. Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor just a week before the 2024 general elections, a move many described as politically motivated, since the project had not yet been completed or purified as tradition demands.
Following the recent purification rite, the market is now operational under the supervision of the current Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro.
Speaking to the media during his visit on the first trading day after the renovation, Hon. Castro expressed satisfaction with the progress but noted that some parts of the project still require finishing touches.
“The toilet facility is yet to be completed, the stores though wired are not connected to electricity, and a few doors remain unfinished,” he said.
The MCE appealed to the District Assemblies Common Fund Secretariat and the market committee to follow up with the contractor to ensure that all pending works are completed.
He emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that the market becomes fully functional and serves as a vibrant commercial centre for traders and residents of the municipality and beyond.
