In a remarkable show of unity and cultural diplomacy, the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, made history at this year’s Akwapim Odwira Festival, becoming one of the few northern traditional rulers to personally grace the celebration.
The revered king arrived in the Eastern Region with a high-powered delegation of Chiefs and Elders from the Gonja Kingdom. His entourage was received with overwhelmed cheers, traditional drumming, and dancing as the Okuapehene, Nana Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, and the people of Akwapim warmly welcomed him to the festival grounds.
In his goodwill address, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I commended the Akwapim Traditional Council for preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage and fostering peace and unity among its people.
He called on traditional rulers across the country to promote inter-ethnic cooperation, peacebuilding, and sustainable development, emphasizing that “the future of Ghana depends on how well we work together beyond our cultural boundaries.”
As part of his offer to mark the occasion, the Yagbonwura announced the lease of 100 acres of land for youth-focused agricultural projects aimed at improving food security and employment opportunities.
He also offered full educational scholarships to ten brilliant but needy students, reaffirming his dedication to promoting education and investing in human capital development.
Expressing gratitude, Okuapehene Nana Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III and his elders hailed the Yagbonwura’s visit as a moment of cultural renewal and a vivid reminder of Ghana’s shared destiny. They emphasized that such collaborations strengthen the social fabric that binds the nation together.
This year’s Odwira Festival, celebrated under the theme “Unity in Diversity: Strengthening Traditions for National Development,” attracted dignitaries from across the country, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, Hon. Samuel Awuku, MP for Akuapem North, and the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Akwatey.
