Report Co-Payments for Refund – NHIS Cautions Service Users

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has cautioned clients against making co-payments at accredited health facilities, urging them to report such incidents to the nearest NHIS office for redress.

Speaking at the NHIA “Storm the Market” float in Damongo on Saturday, October 25, 2025, Lawyer Baba Sadick Zankawa, Ag. Director at the NHIS Head Office representing the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, outlined the CEO’s vision to eliminate co-payments and ensure prompt service delivery under the scheme.

He explained that addressing co-payment remains one of the CEO’s top priorities, as it undermines public trust in the system.

“Once your insurance is valid, don’t pay. If any facility insists you pay, collect a receipt and report to the NHIS office your money will be refunded,” he emphasized.

Lawyer Zankawa noted that the NHIS is working to ensure timely payments to healthcare providers so they can procure medicines and logistics needed for quality healthcare delivery.

He added that the Scheme now covers about 95% of essential medicines, and members have the right to challenge any facility that claims otherwise.

He further highlighted that the CEO is committed to rolling out the government’s Free Primary Healthcare Policy, which is in its advanced stages of implementation.

“The CEO is determined to make free primary healthcare a reality, in line with the government’s vision of accessible healthcare for all,” he said.

The Savannah Regional Operations Manager, Mr. Sankara, also urged residents to become ambassadors of the NHIS and make use of the Scheme’s digital services.

“The NHIS is not owing any facility in the municipality. All outstanding debts have been cleared. Members can now conveniently renew their cards using the NHIS mobile app or the short code *929#,” he announced.
