Officials of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), led by Managing Director Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, paid a working visit to the Savannah Region on Friday, November 21, to conduct a technical assessment and ground inspection of the Damongo Water Project.
The team, which includes Board Members, consultants, and senior staff of GWL, visited Yapei and Damongo to evaluate the existing water systems and inspect the proposed sites for new infrastructure.
The visit focused on examining the condition of the Yapei water system and the proposed pipelines and facilities that will channel treated water to Damongo and surrounding communities, and parts of the Northern Region.
The initiative forms a major part of the government’s renewed commitment to securing a sustainable, long-term water solution for residents of Damongo and the West Gonja Municipality.
Speaking to the media during the visit, Hon. Mutawakilu emphasized the importance of the project to President John Dramani Mahama, noting that it was prominently featured in the 2026 Budget Statement.
According to him, financing for the project has already been secured, and discussions on the technical and financial details are underway to ensure the selection of a competent contractor.
He explained that President Mahama is determined to ensure that the people of Damongo receive potable water under his tenure, adding that this preliminary visit was necessary for himself and the GWL Board Chairman to get a firsthand understanding of the project scope, especially the designated site for the water treatment plant.
When completed, the project is expected to supply Tamale with 135,000 cubic meters of treated water per day, while Damongo will receive 10,000 cubic meters daily significantly boosting access to clean water in both areas.
The Damongo component of the project is expected to be completed within 24 months once construction officially begins.
Residents who engaged with the officials expressed renewed hope, describing the visit as a major milestone in addressing the municipality’s long-standing water challenges.
