West Gonja MCE Supports Artisans with Training Kits, Reaffirms Industrial Vision for Damongo

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering local artisans and transforming Damongo into an industrial hub within the Savannah Region.

Hon. Castro made this known when he honoured an invitation by the Ghana Enterprise Agency (GEA) at the Damongo Community Centre, where training kits were distributed to artisans across the municipality.

Beneficiaries included carpenters, masons, barbers, plumbers, auto mechanics, and other skilled workers.

The MCE was accompanied by officials of the Municipal Assembly led by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Mustapha B. Adam. Other dignitaries present were the Savannah Regional Manager of the Ghana Enterprise Agency, Mr. Adams Sina; the NHIS District Manager, Mr. Iddrisu B. Abdul Rahaman; the Savannah Regional Deputy Director of NADMO, Alhaji Issahaku Jamani; Hon. Assembly Members; the Constituency Communication Officer, Hon. Mumuni Yahaya Kiyoyo; and other key stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Castro commended the artisans for their invaluable contributions to the development of the municipality and the nation at large. He urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the tools provided to enhance their productivity, improve their standard of living, and create employment opportunities for the youth.

He further highlighted that the Reset Agenda of President H.E. John Dramani Mahama places strong emphasis on supporting artisans nationwide. According to him, government will soon roll out additional programmes aimed at strengthening artisans in their various fields of specialization to improve their livelihoods.

The MCE also shared his vision of positioning Damongo, the Savannah Regional Capital, as a vibrant industrial hub where local talents can be nurtured and developed.

He disclosed that major projects, including the Fufulso–Sawla Road Project and the Damongo–Tamale–Yendi Water Project, are expected to commence soon, creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities for artisans in the municipality.

He encouraged artisans to form cooperative unions and work under experienced contractors, noting that such arrangements could enable them to access up to 50 percent of municipal contracts.

Hon. Castro pledged his readiness to facilitate this process.

Additionally, he assured beneficiaries that upcoming infrastructure projects would prioritise the engagement of local artisans over contractors from outside the municipality.

He revealed that, God willing, sod-cutting ceremonies for some projects would take place in selected communities the following day.

At the end of the programme, beneficiaries expressed excitement over the MCE’s plans and pledged their commitment to work hard to support the government’s development agenda and the President’s vision for the country.
