WGM: DecLaRe Project Strengthens Land Resilience Research

The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) has funded a major research initiative aimed at enhancing land resilience across West Africa.

The project, known as “Decision Support for Strengthening Land Resilience in the Face of Global Challenges” (DecLaRe), forms part of the broader programme “Sustainable Land Management in Sub-Saharan Africa: Improving Livelihoods Through On-the-Ground Research.”

As part of its activities in Ghana, the project team held an in-depth stakeholder engagement in the West Gonja Municipality on Monday, December 1, at the Catholic Conference Hall in Damongo.

The meeting brought together traditional authorities, farmers, community representatives and local government officials to discuss land management challenges and explore sustainable solutions.

With support under Project ID 100537724, the DecLaRe initiative aims to provide scientific tools and practical approaches to help communities manage land resources more effectively amid climate change, population pressures and environmental degradation.

The project in Ghana is coordinated by Prof. George Nyarko, who leads collaboration efforts between researchers, institutions and community stakeholders.

His role ensures Ghana's contributions meaningfully support the wider West African research agenda.

The DecLaRe project also nurtures emerging researchers, including PhD scholars across the sub-region, who are working to develop innovative strategies for sustainable land management.

Through this partnership, BMFTR and the research team aim to promote evidence-based decision-making and strengthen the resilience of landscapes and livelihoods throughout West Africa.
