Traditional leaders from the Gonja, Brifo and Vagla communities have performed a purification ritual at Gbinyiri in the Savannah Region following months of tension and conflict over land ownership.
The ceremony was led by Dagbigu clan leaders, under the guidance of the chief priest, Koori Deleka, and took place in the early hours of Friday, January 23, 2026.
The ritual was aimed at cleansing the disputed land, restoring peace, and promoting reconciliation among the affected communities.
The dispute, which initially began as a boundary disagreement, escalated into violent clashes, resulting in the destruction of property, the displacement of families, and the loss of lives on both sides.
The unrest disrupted farming activities in the area and heightened fears of further escalation among residents.
Speaking on behalf of the Gbinyiri Mediation Committee, a government-established body, Rev. Father Lazarus Annyerie described the purification exercise as a significant step towards achieving sustainable peace in the area.
He noted that the ritual reflects the collective commitment of the communities to peaceful coexistence and said it has addressed a key aspect of the committee’s mandate.
Rev. Annyerie expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed to making the ceremony possible and assured that the outcome would be communicated to the rest of the committee.
Residents have welcomed the development, expressing hope that the ritual will pave the way for lasting peace and the resumption of normal economic activities, particularly farming, in the area.
