Early Thursday, February 26, 2026, a devastating fire engulfed Alhassan Kura, a suburb of Damongo in the Savannah Region, destroying ten rooms and property worth millions of Ghana cedis.
The blaze, which reportedly began inside one of the rooms, spread rapidly after igniting a foam mattress and extending to the ceiling. Residents initially suspected an electrical fault and attempted to disconnect the power source but were unable to contain the flames.
The victim, Mr. Inusah Alhassan, son of Ngbaripe Wurche, was left distraught as he watched his belongings consumed by the fire.
Eyewitnesses alleged that although they contacted the Ghana National Fire Service, there was a delay in response. They claimed they were initially informed of water shortages before firefighters arrived at the scene.
However, the DO3 Officer, Mr. Philip Okumah, refuted the allegations, stating that the fire tender carried approximately 30 drums of water and responded promptly upon receiving the distress call.
He explained that additional water was later supplied with support from the Municipal Assembly. He emphasized that the Service responds to all emergency calls despite challenges such as prank reports and urged residents to use the official emergency lines instead of visiting the station to lodge complaints.
He also advised the public to adopt safer building designs, including proper gables, to help limit fire spread.
The Zonal Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. Jamani Abdul Malik, confirmed that his team swiftly intervened to calm affected residents and assess the damage for possible emergency assistance.
No casualties were recorded as of the time of filing this report. Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
