Ghana Water Limited MD Donates Food Items, Cash to Damongo Prison Camp to Support Inmates During Ramadan

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has donated food items and cash to the Damongo Prison Camp in the Savannah Region to support inmates during the holy month of Ramadan.

The donation, presented on February 24, 2026, comprised 10 bags of 50kg rice, 10 bags of 50kg sugar, and GH₵5,000 in cash.

The gesture followed a request from prison authorities for assistance to help cater for inmates observing the Ramadan fast.

Presenting the items on behalf of the Managing Director, Mr. Amidu Abdullah described the timing of the donation as significant.

“The coincidence of this donation with the month of fasting is divine,” he said, noting that the support was intended to ease the burden on inmates and prison authorities during the sacred period.

The Station Officer in Charge of the facility, CSP Amatus Siekure, expressed profound appreciation for the gesture, stating that the items would go a long way to supplement the feeding of inmates.

He explained that although government recently increased the feeding rate from GH₵1.80 to GH₵5.00 per meal, the amount remains inadequate to fully meet the nutritional needs of inmates, making external support crucial.

CSP Siekure also highlighted key challenges confronting the facility, particularly water supply. According to him, the prison relies on a mechanized borehole located about two kilometres away, warning that any breakdown could severely disrupt operations.

He appealed for support to construct an additional mechanized borehole to ensure reliable water access.

Beyond immediate welfare needs, the Station Officer called for assistance to equip the prison’s workshops to enhance vocational training for inmates.

He noted that empowering inmates with employable skills would aid their reintegration into society after serving their sentences.

He further referenced the “Think Prison 360” initiative, an awareness campaign aimed at drawing public attention to the needs and operations of the prison.

The initiative includes public sensitization through Damongo-based radio stations, Kasha FM and Spear FM, as well as efforts to promote agricultural mechanization at the facility.

CSP Siekure encouraged individuals and organizations to support the prison with agricultural inputs to help transform the Damongo Prison Camp into a hub for agricultural production.

Responding to the appeals, Mr. Abdullah assured prison authorities that their concerns would be conveyed to Hon. Mutawakilu for consideration.

Meanwhile, as part of this year’s Ramadan charity outreach, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu has also distributed bags of sugar across the constituency to support Muslim communities during the fasting period.
