GTA Savannah Marks Chocolate Day with Donation to Damongo Prison Inmates

The Savannah Regional Office of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) commemorated Valentine’s Day with a gesture of goodwill, distributing locally made chocolates to inmates at the Damongo Prison Camp in the Savannah Region.

The donation, made on February 14, 2026, formed part of efforts to promote the consumption of Ghanaian-produced chocolates while extending love and solidarity to inmates as part of the nationwide Chocolate Day celebration.

Speaking to the media during the visit, Acting Savannah Regional Director of the GTA, Alhaji Suleman Ahmed, said the initiative was aimed at showcasing love and encouraging the public to patronize locally manufactured chocolate products.

“The main purpose of our visit is to showcase love for the day, popularly known as Valentine’s Day, now also celebrated as Chocolate Day,” he stated.

He explained that the campaign, championed by the Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ghana Cocoa Board, seeks to boost the consumption of made-in-Ghana chocolates and support the local cocoa industry.

Alhaji Ahmed also reminded residents of the Savannah Region to embrace the wearing of the traditional smock, popularly known as ‘fugu’, every Wednesday.

According to him, the directive was introduced by President John Dramani Mahama through the Ministry of Tourism to promote Ghanaian culture and indigenous textiles.

Receiving the items on behalf of the facility, the Station Officer in Charge of the Damongo Prison Camp, CSP Amatus Siekure, expressed appreciation to the Ghana Tourism Authority for the thoughtful gesture.

He noted that the donation would foster a sense of belonging and shared humanity among inmates and officers.

CSP Siekure appealed to the general public to support the relatively new facility, which is situated in a remote area, emphasizing that assistance in various forms would be beneficial.

He further highlighted ongoing reforms within the correctional system, explaining that the focus has shifted from purely punitive measures to corrective and rehabilitative approaches.

Inmates, he said, are equipped with vocational and life skills to help them reintegrate into society as responsible and productive citizens upon their release.

He commended the Ghana Tourism Authority for extending the Chocolate Day celebration to the prison camp and expressed hope that such initiatives would help reshape public perceptions about prisons and inmates.
