West Gonja Marks National Sanitation Day with Community Clean-Up in Busunu

The West Gonja Municipal Assembly on Saturday marked this month’s National Sanitation Day with a clean-up exercise at Busunu, as part of the government’s renewed drive to improve environmental cleanliness across the country on the first Saturday of every month.

The exercise was led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, alongside management and staff of the Municipal Assembly, with active participation from residents of Busunu.

Addressing participants after the exercise, Hon. Castro said the initiative was critical to preventing sanitation-related diseases and reducing health-care costs for families in the community.

He stressed that maintaining a clean environment was a shared responsibility and urged residents not to limit clean-up efforts to designated National Sanitation Days alone.

The MCE commended the people of Busunu for their commitment to cleanliness, particularly referencing the recent community “homing” programme during which the town was noticeably well-kept.

He described the current exercise as a follow-up to those efforts and encouraged residents to sustain the same discipline and positive attitude toward environmental hygiene.

Hon. Castro also raised concern about a portion of land in the Busunu township currently used as an open dumping site and for open defecation, describing it as a serious environmental and public health hazard.

He appealed to the Busunuwura to release the land to the Municipal Assembly for development into a lorry station, which he said would bring long-term benefits to the community.

He therefore thanked the chiefs, opinion leaders, and residents of Busunu for their strong turnout and cooperation, noting that such collective action was key to achieving a cleaner and healthier municipality.
