Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, Coordinator of the National Schools and Grassroots Sports Secretariat in Ghana, has reiterated the importance of structured grassroots sports development as a foundation for national sporting success.
He made these remarks during the Eastern Region Super Zonal Sports Festival held in Koforidua, an event that brought together student-athletes, coaches, and sports administrators from across the region.
Speaking at the festival, Professor Sarpong emphasised that school sports remain a critical pipeline for nurturing young talents who can later represent Ghana at higher competitive levels. According to him, investing in school and grassroots sports is not optional but essential for the long-term growth and sustainability of sports in the country.
He commended the organisers, participating schools, and regional sports authorities for their commitment to youth development through sports. Professor Sarpong noted that platforms such as the Super Zonal Sports Festival provide young athletes with the opportunity to showcase their abilities, build discipline, and develop teamwork and leadership skills.
He further encouraged stakeholders, including government agencies, school authorities, and the private sector, to continue supporting school sports programmes. Such collective effort, he said, would help identify and groom future national athletes while also promoting unity and healthy competition among students.
The Eastern Region Super Zonal Sports Festival forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to strengthen sports development at the school and grassroots levels, reinforcing the role of sports in education and national development.
