Government Distributes Fertilizers to Schools in West Gonja to Boost Institutional Farming

The Government of Ghana has distributed fertilizers to nine selected institutions within the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region as part of efforts to promote institutional farming and reduce feeding costs in schools.

The initiative, carried out on Monday, April 6, 2026, targets all Senior High Schools in the municipality as well as an agricultural college, with the aim of equipping students with practical agricultural skills while supporting food production.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Banira Richard Forgor, who represented the Deputy Coordinator of the Feed Ghana Programme, reaffirmed government’s commitment to making agriculture an attractive and viable venture, particularly for the youth.

He disclosed that Mr. Peter Nuhu, a native of West Gonja and appointee of the President in charge of Farmer Service Centres, has facilitated plans for the establishment of a centre in Damongo.

According to him, construction is expected to commence this year, with West Gonja and three other districts set to benefit from the first phase of the project.

Mr. Forgor explained that the Farmer Service Centres will be equipped with tractors, farm inputs, and storage facilities, including silos, to support farmers and improve agricultural productivity across the region.

He further noted that the Feed Ghana Programme comprises two key components: the Farmer Service Centres and Institutional Agriculture.

He indicated that through strategic engagement, he was able to secure the fertilizers for schools in the municipality, adding that more institutions are expected to benefit in subsequent distributions.

Mr. Forgor also highlighted the “Nkoko Nkiti Nkiti” initiative under the programme, encouraging schools to actively participate in agricultural activities to take advantage of available government support.

Receiving the items on behalf of Damongo Agriculture College and Alliance Sciences, Principal Mohammed Nuhu Adams expressed appreciation to the government, stating that the fertilizers will significantly enhance both academic and commercial farming activities at the institution.

He noted that the support will enable the college to expand crop production, improve practical training for students, and boost internally generated revenue.

Similarly, the Headmaster of Larabanga Islamic Senior High School, Mr. Yakubu Danaba Seidu, commended the government for the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.

He observed that many schools have already embraced farming to supplement their feeding programmes and expressed optimism that the initiative would further strengthen such efforts.
