GLYA to Institute Annual Ndewura Jakpa Day to Honour Gonja Kingdom Founder

The Gonjaland Youth Association (GLYA) has announced plans to institute an annual Ndewura Jakpa Day, with the pronouncement made during its 50th anniversary celebration in Buipe.

The initiative, described as historic and culturally significant, aims to honour the enduring legacy of Ndewura Jakpa, the revered founder of the Gonja Kingdom.

The move has been widely welcomed by stakeholders across Gonjaland, signaling a renewed commitment by the youth to preserve, celebrate, and promote the rich cultural heritage that defines the Gonja identity.

Ndewura Jakpa, whose leadership and sacrifice laid the foundation for the Gonja Kingdom, remains a symbol of unity, courage, and vision. His legacy continues to inspire generations and serves as a reminder of the origins and strength of the Gonja people.

Speaking at the anniversary event, the President of GLYA, Mr. Baba Darison, said the institution of Ndewura Jakpa Day will go beyond commemoration to promote education, reflection, and cultural revival.

“This day will serve as a reminder of who we are, where we come from, and the values that bind us together as a people,” he stated. “It is about reclaiming our story and ensuring that future generations grow up with a strong sense of identity and pride.”

He further noted that the initiative comes at a time when there is growing advocacy for cultural preservation and increased youth involvement in heritage promotion.

Observers believe the move positions the Association as a key driver in safeguarding tradition while fostering unity and identity among the youth.

The annual Ndewura Jakpa Day is expected to become a major cultural event, ensuring that the legacy of the Gonja Kingdom’s founder continues to live on in the hearts and minds of the people for generations to come.
