The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Bii-Awurbi, in collaboration with seven, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the region, has officially signed documents for the construction of 24-hour economy markets.
The historic signing ceremony, held on April 2, 2026, forms part of the government’s policy to establish a 24-hour market in every district nationwide.
Addressing stakeholders, the Regional Minister described the event as a major milestone, emphasizing that all seven MMDCEs were present to witness and commit to the implementation of what he termed “modular 24-hour markets.”
He explained that the markets have been classified into four categories.
Category 1 to Category 4 based on scale and strategic importance.
The top-tier designs have been allocated to key districts including West Gonja (Damongo), Bole, and Central Gonja (Buipe), citing their economic relevance within the region.
According to him, Damongo, as the regional capital, requires a modern, high-capacity market.
Bole’s cross-border commercial activities, particularly with Côte d’Ivoire, make it a vital trade hub, while Buipe continues to serve as a major commercial center with extended market days from Saturday through Tuesday.
He added that the remaining districts have been assigned suitable categories to ensure balanced economic development across the Savannah Region.
The Minister stressed that the project is a legacy initiative, assuring strict supervision to guarantee quality delivery.
He warned that contractors who fail to meet standards risk contract termination, while also assuring that government will ensure timely payments to facilitate smooth execution.
He further disclosed that contractors have pledged to continue work even in the face of possible payment delays, as measures have been put in place to ensure prompt release of funds to the assemblies, which now have enhanced financial capacity.
On compensation concerns, the Minister clarified that affected persons will not receive monetary compensation.
Instead, traditional authorities have provided alternative lands to support relocation.
He assured that any land-related challenges would be addressed promptly, including possible relocation of project sites where necessary, to ensure successful implementation across all seven districts.
