The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has announced that the Government of Ghana has secured €106 million in grant funding for the implementation of the Damongo and Tamale Water Projects.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, as part of his working visit to the Savannah Region, the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, announced that funding secured for the Damongo and Tamale Water Projects is a €106 million grant, not a loan, and therefore will not require repayment by the Government of Ghana.
The GWL Managing Director further assured residents that all persons whose farms, houses, lands, or other properties may be affected by the construction of the water transmission line from Yapei to beneficiary communities will be fully compensated before work begins.
According to him, the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) is being implemented to identify and compensate affected persons while ensuring that all social and environmental requirements are met prior to the commencement of construction.
Mr. Mutawakilu introduced the RAP implementation team to the Yagbonwura and his council and sought their support and blessings for the successful execution of the project.
He noted that beyond improving access to safe drinking water, the Damongo/Tamale Water Projects are expected to create jobs for local youth and drive socio-economic development across the Savannah and Northern Regions.
In response, Yagbonwura Bikunuto Jewu Soale I commended the government and Ghana Water Limited for their commitment to addressing the area's longstanding water challenges.
He pledged the support of the Gonja Traditional Council and offered prayers for the successful implementation of the project.
The Damongo/Tamale Water Projects are expected to improve access to potable water for thousands of residents and contribute to the long-term development of beneficiary communities.
