Former Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency and Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has commissioned an ultra-modern mosque he constructed for the people of Damongo, fulfilling a long-standing promise made to him by his late father.
The mosque, which was commissioned on Thursday, August 20, 2026, is expected to provide the community with a befitting place of worship while serving as a lasting tribute to the memory of Alhaji Adamu Kelly Nkonta.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Mutawakilu said the inspiration for the project dated back to his childhood, when his father encouraged him to transform the small mosque then being used by the community into a modern place of worship.
“When I was young, my father, the late Alhaji Adamu Kelly Nkonta, used to tell me, ‘My son, when you grow up, build this small mosque we are using into a befitting mosque.’ As a child, I did not really understand what my father was saying,” he recalled.
Hon. Mutawakilu said he was grateful to have been able to fulfil his late father’s wish and expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for the confidence reposed in him through his appointment as Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited.
The project, which took several years to complete, was affected by financial challenges that stalled construction. Despite the setbacks, Hon. Mutawakilu remained committed to completing the mosque.
The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Bii-Awurbi, who attended the commissioning ceremony, commended Hon. Mutawakilu for his determination to complete the project despite the difficulties.
According to the Regional Minister, the prolonged delay had also been used by some political opponents in attempts to discredit Hon. Mutawakilu.
But he however, said he remained determined to complete the project.
The Regional Minister described the completed mosque as an important addition to the Damongo community and praised Hon. Mutawakilu for honouring his commitment.
Following the commissioning, the caretaker of the mosque, Sheikh Alhaji Mustapha Meem, announced that the facility had officially been opened for worship.
He said Jummah prayers would be held at the mosque every Friday, providing residents with a new venue for congregational prayers.
Sheikh Mustapha also announced plans for Quran recitation at the mosque at the beginning of every month.
He said prayers would be offered for the peace and development of Ghana, as well as for President Mahama and members of his administration.
The completion of the ultra-modern mosque marks the fulfilment of a promise that began with a simple request from a father to his young son.
Beyond its religious significance, the facility is expected to serve as a lasting legacy of Hon. Mutawakilu’s commitment to his community and a permanent tribute to the memory of his late father, Alhaji Adamu Kelly Nkonta.
