Basic Inter-Regional Games: Savannah Team Appeals for Urgent Financial Support

West Gonja

Savannah Region participation in the Basic Inter-Regional Games in Accra is in doubt as the team faces an urgent financial challenge ahead of its scheduled departure on Monday, August 24.

The development follows the region’s 5th Annual Inter-District Games held in Sawla, where athletes were selected and prepared for the inter-regional competition.

Although the teams received support from Savannah Regional NDC Chairman Imoro Seidu (Chairman Man Blessings) and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba MP Andrew Dari Chiwitey, the regional team is still struggling to raise funds for fuel and other important logistics.

Chairman Imoro Seidu donated jerseys and tracksuits and presented GH¢15,000 to STK District, GH¢10,000 to West Gonja and GH¢5,000 to Kpalbi District. MP Chiwitey also donated jerseys and footballs and supported the STK team with its competition-related expenses.

Speaking on Kasha FM Weekend Sports with Seidu Awal, Savannah Regional Physical Education Coordinator Mr. Iddrisu, popularly known as Yurina, said buses had been secured from some Senior High Schools, but funding for fuel and other travel expenses remained a major challenge.

He appealed to government authorities, corporate organisations, philanthropists, football enthusiasts and other stakeholders to provide urgent support to enable the young athletes to travel to Accra.

The situation has raised concerns over funding for sports development in the region, with calls for stronger institutional support and sustainable financing for youth sports.

With less than 24 hours to the scheduled departure, Savannah Region’s historic debut now hangs on urgent financial intervention to ensure the young athletes do not miss their chance to represent the region.
