Savannah Regional Minister Hon. Salisu Bii-Awurbi has warned that the contractor handling the Salaga 24-Hour Economy Market project risks losing the contract if work does not improve in both speed and quality.
The Regional Minister issued the warning on Monday, August 10, 2026, during a working visit to the East Gonja Municipality, where he inspected key government projects and engaged residents at an “Account to the People” forum at the Salaga Community Centre.
Hon. Bii-Awurbi inspected the 24-Hour Economy Market, Salaga Islamic Primary School and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Centre as part of efforts by the Savannah Regional Coordinating Council to track the progress and quality of government projects.
While commending the progress of work at the Salaga Islamic Primary School and TVET Centre, the Minister expressed serious concern about delays at the 24-Hour Economy Market.
He reminded the contractor that a previous warning had already been issued over the slow pace of construction and cautioned that the next communication could be a termination notice if there was no substantial improvement.
The contractor appealed for additional time, explaining that underground water at the site had been a major setback. According to the contractor, the water has now been successfully drained, allowing construction to resume at a faster pace.
The Minister urged the contractor to seize the opportunity created by the improved site conditions, accelerate work and ensure that the project is completed on schedule and to the required standards.
The projects inspection was followed by an “Account to the People” engagement, which brought together traditional leaders, local authorities, residents, stakeholders and other key actors to discuss development in the East Gonja Municipality.
Residents used the platform to raise concerns and make suggestions on critical issues, including roads, education, healthcare, water and sanitation, agriculture, infrastructure and youth employment.
Hon. Bii-Awurbi emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability and citizen participation in local governance, urging residents to remain actively involved in development activities and engage their leaders on issues affecting their communities.
The engagement is expected to deepen collaboration between local authorities and residents while promoting greater accountability and inclusive development across the East Gonja Municipality.
