The West Gonja Municipal Assembly has disbursed GH¢273,500.00 to 88 persons living with disabilities as part of the government’s initiative to support their economic empowerment and improve their livelihoods.
The disbursement, which represents the third tranche of the Assembly’s support programme, was made on September 15, 2026, to assist the beneficiaries in pursuing sustainable economic activities and improving their financial independence.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of Persons Living with Disabilities, Mr. Amin Fusieni, urged beneficiaries to use the money wisely and invest it in productive ventures.
“This money we are giving to you is not for you to use to buy expensive clothes, but to use judiciously,” he cautioned, adding that officials would monitor how the funds were used.
He warned that beneficiaries who were found to have misused the money could have their names removed from the programme and be prevented from accessing future support.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to improving the welfare of persons living with disabilities.
According to him, the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, has demonstrated strong commitment to supporting persons with disabilities.
“This is the third time we are meeting like this to disburse funds to persons living with disabilities, and as we speak, we are taking application forms from your colleagues to support them as well,” he said.
Hon. Castro encouraged beneficiaries to invest the money in small businesses and other sustainable ventures, stressing that the money could serve as a useful source of capital.
He also urged them to avoid relying on begging for survival and instead take advantage of available support programmes to become economically independent.
The MCE further encouraged persons living with disabilities to have confidence in their abilities, noting that they can achieve their goals and contribute meaningfully to society despite their challenges.
