On July 24, 2024, the MEDA Greater Rural Opportunities for Women 2 (GROW2) project, in collaboration with the Center for Conflict Transformation and Peace Studies (CECOTAPS) and funded by Global Affairs Canada, facilitated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Damango.

The MoU, signed between the Regional Department of Gender and the Regional House of Chiefs, is set to ensure women in the Savannah Region have reliable access to fertile agricultural land.

This agreement builds upon a similar MoU from 2018, which was part of the GROW2 project's first phase in the Upper West Region.

The new MoU addresses traditional barriers to land ownership and aims to reduce women's vulnerability to unexpected changes in land allocation.

The GROW2 project has been instrumental in advocating for women's land rights, recognizing that land is a fundamental asset for agricultural productivity and economic empowerment.

Francis Essuman, Country Project Manager of the GROW2 project, expressed excitement about the MoU adoption, emphasizing its importance in securing land rights for women farmers in the Savannah Region.

He highlighted that uninterrupted access to fertile land is vital for their economic empowerment and the development of the agricultural sector.

Rev. Fr. David Dum Yaaka, Director of CECOTAPS, stressed the importance of collaboration in this initiative.

He noted that the partnership with the Regional House of Chiefs and the Regional Department of Gender shows a united effort to tackle the challenges faced by women farmers.

He added that, the MoU will establish a foundation for sustainable agriculture and long-term economic stability for women in the region.

The signing event was attended by chiefs, government representatives, NGOs, community leaders, landowners, and women farmers, emphasizing the collective effort to advance gender equality and improve women's socioeconomic status in agriculture.

The GROW2 project, a five-year initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada, aims to support 40,000 women farmers, 5,000 entrepreneurs, and 50 women-led agribusinesses in northern Ghana.

Its goals include enhancing the business environment, promoting climate-smart and nutrition-focused agricultural practices, and advancing gender equality.
