NPP supporters are defecting amid accusations that Hon. Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency, is interfering in the chieftaincy affairs of the Damongo traditional area.
Damongo-wura, Kelly Seidu Boresa (I), with his sub-chiefs and elders, have brought to the public's attention the alleged interference of Hon. Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency, in the Damongo chieftaincy matters.
According to them, this interference has persisted since Damongo-wura Kelly Seidu Boresa (I) ascended to the throne of the Damongo traditional area.
Since the passing of Damongo-wura Lemu Jakpa in 2016, the chieftaincy issue in Damongo has been contentious.
After years of disputes, the matter was settled according to customs and traditions by Yagbonwura BiiKunuto Jewu Soale (I), the King of the Gonja Kingdom, through consultations with kingmakers, his council of elders, and other key stakeholders of the Damongo traditional area.
On November 24, 2023, Damongo-wura Kelly was affirmed as the legitimate Damongo-wura and has since been acting in that capacity.
Upon his affirmation, Damongo-wura Kelly reached out to all key stakeholders, including religious leaders, political party leaders, and sister tribes within the traditional area, specifically extending an invitation to MP Hon. Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor.
While all other stakeholders have recognized Damongo-wura Kelly's legitimacy and expressed readiness to work with him, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor has refused to acknowledge the decision of the Yagbonwura and his council of elders.
This refusal and continuous interference have raised serious security concerns in Damongo and its environs.
Security officials in the Savannah region have made arrests related to these tensions, but Hon. Jinapor allegedly ordered the release of the arrested individuals.
Following their release, these individuals reportedly celebrated in the streets of Damongo, disrespecting Jira Yagbonwura BiiKunuto Jewu Soale I, thereby undermining the peace and security of Damongo.
The Damongo-wura and his sub-chiefs have called on the leadership of the NPP, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo, NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Chieftaincy Minister to intervene and address Hon. Abu Jinapor's actions.
They cautioned that should the MP continue to persist in ignoring their plea, the community will organize a massive demonstration within a month to express their dissatisfaction and seek remedies from higher authorities.
The Damongo-wura emphasized that their objective is to maintain peace and tranquillity in the traditional area and to attract sustainable development.
However, they issued a strong warning to Hon. Jinapor to cease his interference, stating that it could negatively impact his political career.
The Damongo-wura, his sub-chiefs and the council of elders are committed to seeking the development of the traditional area and maintaining peace, but will not tolerate any actions that compromise the security and authority of the traditional area.
