Savannah College of Education, GTEC Officials Pay Homage to Yagbonwura at Jakpa Palace

The management of Savannah College of Education, in the Wasipe Traditional Area, with officials from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), paid a courtesy call on the King and Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura BiiKunuto Jewu Soale I, on Thursday, March 13.

The visit was to formally express gratitude for his instrumental role in ensuring the government absorption of the college, now recognized as a public institution.

Speaking to Kasha News after the visit, GTEC Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor, who is also a native of the land, noted that the visit was at the request of Education Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, following a formal appeal by Yagbonwura BiiKunuto Jewu Soale I.

The Overlord had sent emissaries to his Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to advocate for the college’s inclusion in the public education system.

Prof. Jinapor confirmed that the Ministry of Education had issued an official statement on the absorption of the college.

He emphasized that while the move was formalized at the national level, it was important to communicate it traditionally out of respect for the Yagbonwura’s leadership.

"As we officially inform the King that his plea has been granted, our next step is to visit the college and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to operationalize the absorption process," he stated.

He further appealed to the people of Gonjaland to support the development of the institution, emphasizing that although the government has absorbed the school, community contributions will be key in elevating its standards to bring development in the region.

Prof. Jinapor was accompanied by other distinguished sons of the land, including Prof. Elliott, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies, and Dr. Apkanpo, Acting Principal of Savannah College of Education.
