A high-powered delegation led by the Nanton Naa, Mahamadu Bawa V, on Sunday, April 6, 2025, paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Jira Yagbonwura Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, at his residence.
The visit was to convey a message from the Ndan Yaa Naa, King of Dagbon, appealing for peace following tensions between Dagbon settlers and the youth of the Wasipe Traditional Area.
The conflict originates from the settlers annual hunting festival, which has triggered concerns among the youth regarding the killing of animals.
Speaking on behalf of the Ndan Yaa Naa, Nanton Naa Mahamadu Bawa V appealed to the Yagbonwura to intervene and help convince the Wasipewura to allow the Dagbon settlers to remain in the area and continue their farming and livelihood activities.
He assured the Yagbonwura of the Ndan Yaa Naa’s commitment to advising his subordinates to respect the customs and laws of their host communities.
During the meeting, Kpembiwura Ndefeso Banbagne expressed disapproval of the hunting festival, describing it as inappropriate given the depletion of wildlife in the Gonja Kingdom. He recommended that the practice be stopped.
The visit is seen as a step towards bringing peaceful coexistence between the Dagbon settlers and the people of the Wasipe Traditional Area.
