The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Yusif Sulemana, on Thursday, May 8, 2025, inaugurated the Savannah Regional Lands Commission Board at the Regional Coordinating Council in Damongo.
The newly constituted board comprises representatives of the seven MDCE in the region, representatives from key institutions, and traditional authorities, in accordance with legal provisions.
Addressing the board after its inauguration, Hon. Sulemana urged members to serve in the interest of the people they represent.
He emphasized the need to avoid conflicts of interest and act with integrity, noting that many qualified individuals had shown interest but were not selected.
Highlighting the vast land size and rich natural resources of the Savannah Region, the minister advised the board to support chiefs in welcoming potential investors. He cautioned, however, that investors must not exploit local communities, stressing the importance of mutual benefit.
He also encouraged continuous consultation with traditional authorities on land-related matters.
Hon. Sulemana disclosed that the Savannah Region is the first in the country to inaugurate its board, despite all regions having received notices.
He commended the Regional Minister and the Acting Regional Chairman of the Lands Commission for their swift action.
Chief Kuluku-Wura Alhaji Haruna Sachibu, the newly appointed chairman of the board, assured the minister that the board would uphold transparency, accountability, and efficiency in land administration.
He pledged to implement fair land allocation systems, promote land ownership registration, and engage all stakeholders including chiefs, government institutions, and civil society in the land governance process.
He further committed to ensuring that all divisions under the Lands Commission, as well as related agencies like Town and Country Planning, operate within their professional mandates to foster public trust in land management across the region.
