World Drug Day Crackdown: 16 Arrested in Damongo, Including Nursing Mother.

As part of activities marking World Drug Day on June 26, 2025, the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. SalisuBi-Awuribi, led a joint security operation targeting drug-related crimes across the region which began in Damongo the Savannah regional capital.

The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission and the regional security apparatus, aims to curb the use, sale, and distribution of illicit drugs through both enforcement and education.

Speaking during the exercise, the Minister explained that the ongoing crackdown began on June 25 and forms part of a broader effort to rid the region of drug abuse and trafficking.

He emphasized that the operation combines punitive measures with sensitization campaigns to raise awareness and prevent innocent individuals especially the youth from being drawn into the drug trade.

“This is not just a one-off event. The exercise will continue across all parts of the region, not only in Damongo. The aim is not to punish but to reform and educate,” he stated.

So far, 16 suspects have been arrested, including two females one of whom is a nursing mother. Security screening revealed that six of the suspects are believed to be drug peddlers.

The arrests took place in various locations, including cemeteries, forests, and other suspected hideouts.

The Minister also praised the security services for their commitment and dedication, noting that they carried out the operation without external resources, relying on their own mobilization efforts.

He further called on parents to play a more active role in guiding their children, urging them to go beyond providing basic needs and instill discipline and sound moral values.

“To those involved in the drug trade, the earlier you stop, the better. Otherwise, there will be no peace for you in the Savannah Region,” he warned.

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has thrown his support behind the initiative, which is expected to intensify in the coming days.

The Minister reaffirmed his trust in the region’s security forces and assured them of his full backing to track down offenders wherever they may be.
