The Ghana Police Service has foiled a planned robbery attack at Buipe in the Savannah Region, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the death of two others during a follow-up operation.
According to Police reports, the incident began on April 26, 2026, when a patrol team on duty along the Yapei–Tamale highway encountered three armed men.
The suspects reportedly opened fire on an armoured police vehicle, prompting officers to return fire. The attackers subsequently fled into a nearby bush, abandoning a locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge at the scene.
Intelligence gathered after the incident led to the arrest of two suspects, Osman Abdulai, also known as “Landan,” and Umar Seidu in Tamale on April 27.
During interrogation, the suspects admitted they were on their way to carry out a robbery at Yapei but were forced to abandon the plan after being involved in a motor accident.
They also confessed to participating in the earlier attack on the police patrol team and identified their accomplices as Babuga, Kilor, and Malami.
Further investigations led the police to a location along the Yapei–Salaga road, where a single-barrel shotgun with a modified barrel and five rounds of ammunition were retrieved.
In a subsequent operation on April 29, based on intelligence provided by Osman Abdulai, police tracked the remaining suspects to a guest house in Buipe.
During the operation, one suspect, identified as Babuga, allegedly attacked officers with a machete and was shot. Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Buipe District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies have since been deposited at St. Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for preservation and autopsy.
Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and dismantle the criminal network.
