The Deputy Minister for Energy and GreenTransition, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, has launched and commissioned a major rural electrification project that will extend electricity to 107 communities across the Savannah Region under the government’s rural electrification programme.
The project was officially launched at the palace of the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, King and Overlord of the Gonja Traditional Kingdom, while commissioning ceremonies for the first phase were held at Seyiri and Kpiri.
Speaking at the event, the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Bii-Awuribi, described the project as a significant milestone in addressing the region’s long-standing low electricity coverage. He said the Savannah Region has historically recorded the lowest electricity access in Ghana and expressed optimism that the initiative would help correct the imbalance by expanding power to underserved communities.
Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah said the electrification project forms part of the government’s broader agenda to improve energy access, promote economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life in rural communities. He noted that the programme targets four regions Savannah, Oti, Volta, and Central with implementation beginning in the Savannah Region.
The Deputy Minister assured residents that the government would closely supervise the project to ensure high-quality work and timely completion, stressing that it would not suffer the delays and abandonment experienced by some past infrastructure projects.
The first phase of the project has brought electricity to several beneficiary communities, including Seyiri, Kpiri Frafra No. 1, Kpiri Frafra No. 2, Kpiri Frafra No. 6, Attributo No. 1, Attributo No. 2, and Cathedral.
Hon. Gyan-Mensah reaffirmed the Ministry of Energy’s commitment to working closely with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other stakeholders to ensure reliable electricity supply and the sustainable maintenance of the new infrastructure.
The electrification project is expected to improve livelihoods by supporting businesses, enhancing educational opportunities, strengthening healthcare delivery, and accelerating socio-economic development across the beneficiary communities.
