Items meant for distribution to beneficiaries have been found abandoned, with some reportedly deteriorated and expired, at a warehouse located at the Canteen area in Damongo in the West Gonja Municipality.
The development has prompted the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja Municipality, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro to give institutions with items stored at the facility a one-week ultimatum to clear and distribute all items that remain in good condition to their intended beneficiaries.
The directive followed an inspection of the warehouse on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, by the MCE and relevant stakeholders to assess the condition of the items and determine the appropriate action.
The MCE directed institutions whose items are still in good condition to ensure that they are distributed to the intended beneficiaries within the one-week period.
He further indicated that items that have deteriorated or expired will be handed over to the appropriate agencies to assist with their safe and proper disposal.
The MCE warned that institutions that fail to act within the stipulated period would compel the Municipal Assembly to intervene.
He stated that should the institutions fail to comply with the directive, he would personally take steps to ensure that the usable items are distributed to the intended beneficiaries.
The Savannah Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Abu Iddrisu, has also raised serious concerns about the condition and management of the warehouse.
Dr. Iddrisu urged the Municipal Assembly to take immediate and decisive action to address the situation, warning that the facility could become a “ticking time bomb” if urgent measures are not taken.
He expressed particular concern about the storage of food products, pesticides and chemicals in the same warehouse, describing the situation as a potential health, environmental and safety risk.
According to him, the co-storage of such materials requires urgent attention to prevent possible contamination, exposure and other hazards.
Dr. Iddrisu also condemned what he described as poor management of the facility and advised the Municipal Assembly to take concrete steps to remedy the situation.
He stressed the need for proper organisation, segregation and management of the warehouse to prevent further deterioration of stored items and minimise risks to public health and the environment.
The inspection is expected to pave the way for the decongestion of the warehouse, distribution of usable items and safe disposal of expired or deteriorated products in collaboration with the relevant agencies.
