West Gonja Municipal Assembly Wins Top Honours as District Assembly of the Year at 2026 Savannah Tourism Awards

 

The West Gonja Municipal Assembly (WGMA) has been honoured with the coveted District Assembly of the Year award at the 2026 Savannah Regional Tourism Awards.


The prestigious award is in recognition of the Assembly's exceptional contribution to tourism development, heritage preservation, destination promotion, stakeholder collaboration, and for creating an enabling environment for tourism-related activities and investment.


Through its dedication and strategic support for tourism initiatives, the Assembly has demonstrated exemplary leadership in showcasing the Municipality's rich cultural heritage, historical attractions, natural resources, and tourism potential.


This honour stands as a testament to the Assembly's unwavering commitment to leveraging tourism as a catalyst for local economic development, job creation, community empowerment, and sustainable development.


Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro, Municipal Chief Executive for West Gonja, who spoke on behalf of the awardees, expressed profound appreciation to the organizers for the recognition. He noted that the prestigious honour would serve as a strong motivation for them to work even harder to harness and enhance the vast tourism potential of the region.

The awards ceremony, sought to honour institutions and individuals who have distinguished themselves in the tourism and hospitality industry within the Savannah Region.


It brought together an array of eminent personalities across the political divide, academia, traditional authorities, public institutions, and the media fraternity.


Present at the event were the Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salisu Be-Awuribe, who was the Guest of Honour, and Prof. Raymond Adongo, Head of Department of Ecotourism and Hospitality Management, UDS Tamale, who chaired the occasion.

Also in attendance was Mr. Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi of the Corporate Affairs Department of the Ghana Tourism Authority Head Office, Accra, who represented the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority.


Other dignitaries included Mr. Alhassan Baba Darison, President of the Gonjaland Youth Association, Kanyepewura Solomon Salifu Tampuri, Esq., Bugapewura M.M. who represented the Bolewura, and some MMDCEs from the region.


The event took place on Friday, 11th September, 2026 at the Wuripe and Sons Royal Lodge in Bole.
